What type of finish is on the furniture and cutting boards?
The furniture is typically hand-rubbed with a unique blend of oils designed to protect the wood while retaining the original color. The finish we use pulls out the grain, unique qualities and texture of the many woods in each product. None of the pieces have any dyes or stains - the colors are all what is naturally in each piece of wood.
All cutting boards are finished with mineral oil which is food-safe, will not get rancid over time (like olive oil or vegetable oils may) and will keep the boards looking like new if applied after each use or as needed. Where do you get your wood?
We purchase our wood primarily from a local lumber mill that is a certified "green" harvester. They utilize sustainable harvesting practices which is incredibly important to us - this is our home and our woods that should be here for generations to come. We attempt to purchase locally, in the Upper Peninsula, whenever it is feasible and economically sound to do so. Other branches and unique pieces of aspen and cedar are found on land in our area belonging to friends and family. Steve is always happy to incorporate a search for wood into a fishing trip to one of the many streams or lakes in the area. He has found some of the best pieces of wood this way! Some past customers have asked that we salvage wood from their property to build a piece of furniture for them. This is an excellent option that we're happy to entertain whenever possible.
Is it really possible/safe to ship the furniture?
Absolutely. We've been told you can ship just about anything, and we believe it. We turn over the actual packaging and shipping of large items to the professionals who do that sort of thing every day - so the price of shipping will vary based upon the size and weight of your item. But rest assured that it will get to you safe, sound and in wonderful condition.
What if I want what I see in one of the pictures, but in a slightly different size?
We specialize in custom orders. Although the items you see here may be for sale, more often than not we find that they are good examples for customers to browse through, and then we end up making a specialized piece based upon your own needs. Do keep in mind that no two pieces are identical so although we can replicate the general style, the pieces of wood will have their own individual look and what you get will not be a cookie cutter twin to what you see here. That's the beauty of handmade, custom artwork!
